Genki Teacher Day

Exercise 2/6: Calisthenics/Volleyball
Time: 30 min

It is exam week. This is how it works: first 3 periods in the morning are exam-time. Then the students go home to study. This goes on all week. In the meantime, teachers are madly marking and preparing the next test. This afternoon, though, was the yearly First Aid/AED training + Teacher Volleyball . So, I sat on a cold gym floor for 1:30min, learning how to use an AED in Japanese! (fun times! :-P) But after that we got to play a couple games of volleyball. THAT was fun. :-)

OK, I give up. What is AED training?

An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator. Small units that can be used to restart someone's heart in the case of a heart attack...although it is only slightly more effective than CPR and must be used WITH CPR...plus you have to HAVE one in the vicinity and know how to use it. (I think it is more for peace of mind than for actual known effectiveness.)
Check it out in English (apparently used widely in Britain) at www.aed.com

I would never have guessed! Thanks for the enlightenment

We had them at the Calgary Airport and they were credited with saving several lives. I believe they're carried on board the aircraft as well. Instructions are pretty simple but training was mandatory for all the security staff as well as many in our office.

Simple...yea, when the instructions are in English! ;-)

But seriously, it was pretty obvious by just watching the demo, what you had to do. I don't know if I could communicate clearly to a Japanese person in an emergency though...like remembering the word for ambulance or "stand back" when the AED was going to shock the patient...
